Neuschwanstein Castle opening hours have two different periods.
Summer (1 Apr - 15 Oct): 9AM - 6PM
Winter (16 Oct - 31 Mar): 10AM - 4PM
Closing dates: Neuschwanstein Castle is closed on December 24th, 25th and 31st and January 1st.
The guided visit lasts approximately 30 minutes and it's the only way to visit the castle.
Neuschwanstein Castle is located in Neuschwansteinstraße 20, 87645 Schwangau, Germany.
Neuschwanstein Castle can only be reached by walking there using the street or the hiking trail, or by taking the bus departing from Hohenschwangau included in the ticket. You can get back to the city on foot or by bus, or with the horse-drawn carriage included in the ticket, when operational.
There is a cafeteria inside the castle, just remember that it only accepts cash as payment. There is also a restaurant a bit down the road, close to the castle, otherwise there is a wide range of places to eat and drink in town.
Neuschwanstein Castle offers accessible bathrooms and an elevator to visitors. There is also a café inside, but there are no lockers, so remember to not bring large items to your visit.
Neuschwanstein Castle is set in the heart of Bavaria, surrounded by plenty of nearby attractions worth exploring.
Just a short walk away, you’ll find Hohenschwangau Castle, the childhood home of King Ludwig II, and the Museum of Bavarian Kings, where you can dive into the fascinating history of the royal family.
Want more scenic views? Take a stroll around Alpsee Lake or hike up to Marienbrücke bridge for the best panoramic shots of Neuschwanstein.
If you’d like to explore beyond the castles, the charming town of Füssen is only a few minutes away, with its medieval old town and Baroque churches.
For nature lovers, the nearby Tegelberg mountain is perfect for hiking or even a cable car ride with breathtaking alpine views!
Highly rated options include small-group guided tours by train and full-day coach tours that also visit Linderhof Palace. Many travelers value tours that combine castle entry with transport and a knowledgeable guide, since this saves time and avoids logistical hassles.
Prices usually range from €60 to €120 per person for standard day trips, depending on group size and inclusions. Private tours with hotel pickup, meals, or multiple castle entries often cost more, sometimes upwards of €200 per person.
A true half-day trip is not practical. The journey alone takes about 2 hours each way, so most organized tours last at least 7 to 10 hours. Travelers seeking a shorter experience should consider private tours with direct transfers, but even then the trip will take most of a day.
Entry is only possible with a guided tour ticket managed by the castle administration. Tickets can be purchased in advance online or through organized tours. Skip-the-line tickets are often bundled with tours departing from Munich, which helps avoid long waits at the ticket office.
Free tickets are available for people who are unemployed, religious figures, people with disabilities and their companions, children under 11 years old, ICOM members and Barcelona Press Card holders and you will have to send your request at least 48 hours before your visit.
The Sagrada Familia also occasionally offers free entry on select days for local residents or special events. These instances are rare and typically announced in advance.
